Eri Silk

All yarns in this collection are made from 100% Eri Silk.

Eri silk is generated from the cocoon fibers of the Samia ricini moth.  This moth is completely domesticated, along with the Bombyx mori (Mulberry) silkworm.  The caterpillars eat leaves of the castor plant, Ricinus communis. 

Unlike the mulberry silkworms, the Eri silk moths are allowed to emerge from the cocoon to breed.  Therefore, silk from these moths is called "Ahimsa", peace, or vegan silk.  Eri silk fibers are shorter than the continuous filament of the Mulberry silkmoths since the moth cuts through the cocoon upon emerging.  This type of silk is certified as Eco-Friendly.

The texture of this silk is coarser, giving a wool-like feel.  The fibers are also finer and denser than their Mulberry cousins.  The final fabric has excellent thermal qualities, ensuring coolness in summer and warmth in winter.
