Tussah Silk

All yarns made from 100% Tussah Silk.

Tussah silk is generated from the cocoon fibers of the Antheraea pernyi moth.  The caterpillars eat oak leaves in the wild, where the cocoons are gathered by hand after the moth emerges.  The fibers are shorter than the continuous fiber of mulberry silk, as the moth cuts the cocoon upon emerging.  Tussah silk is called "Ahimsa", peace, or vegan silk because the caterpillars are not killed in the reeling process.  This type of silk is certified as Eco-Friendly.

Tussah silk is valued for it's natural golden hue and rich texture.  The texture is more wool-like in loft and has less of a sheen than the longer fibers of Mulberry silk.  Most sarees in India are created from Tussah silk.  The final fabric has excellent thermal qualities, ensuring coolness in summer and warmth in winter.  Another interesting tidbit is that Tussah silk can be added to handmade soap to make it slipperier and more luxurious.
